Skill Accumulation and Occupational Mobility

چکیده

In this paper, I develop a dynamic model of occupational mobility in which an interaction of multiple general skills in skill accumulation is introduced. I investigate workers’ motivation to exploit this interaction and how the motivation generates occupational mobility. The results of a structural estimation indicate that the theoretical model is able to replicate a set of empirical patterns of occupational mobility and wage growth. Of particular note is the model’s capability to replicate a novel empirical finding that a majority of workers congregate into occupations requiring relatively balanced skills as they age.

Occupational Mobility, Occupation Distance and Basic Skills: Evidence from Job-Based Skill Measures

In this paper a basic skill vector characterization of occupations is used to examine the relation between human capital specificity and occupational mobility. Specifically, the paper asks, how much occupational mobility is simply moving a given skill or task set around different occupations that use the same skill set, and how much involves major shifts in the skill vectors? The loss of specif...

Human capital accumulation and transition to skilled employment∗

This paper assesses the impact of investmentand education-specific technical change on occupational transition and the skill premium in a model with human capital. In this framework, human capital augments labour productivity and also facilitates the transition to skilled employment. In line with empirical evidence, this setup predicts that an increase in the productivity of physical capital (i...

Trade Liberalization and Intergenerational Occupational Mobility in Urban India∗

In this paper, we make two novel contributions to the literature on trade and inequality. First, we show that the same mechanism that causes greater cross-sectional inequality, higher relative demand for skill, also facilitates intergenerational occupational mobility. In particular, we develop a stylized model that shows that the innovation induced by international trade causes an increase in t...

Strength in Numbers: Networks as a Solution to Occupational Traps

The “new classical” theory states that families in low-skill occupations with low levels of human capital can stay poor from one generation to the next, while families in high-skill occupations with correspondingly high levels of human capital stay wealthy, despite being endowed with the same level of ability on average. This paper proposes an informal institutional mechanism—the community-base...
